2018 — present— On the craft —
“Time, captured in its factual forms — such is the supreme idea of cinema as an art.”
“We are writing stories with light and darkness, motion and colors.”
“The language of cinematography is light. You start with perfect black and turn one light on.”
“The light is not mine — it is already there.”
“I like to use light as a grammar, a language.”
“Whatever happens, it is the director of photography who answers for the image.”
“You've got to see. Learn to see. Learn to feel light.”
“Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen.”
“Photography is nothing. It's life that interests me.”
“We don't really see things. We just look. Real seeing happens once we look closer.”
“To be an artist means never to avert one's eyes.”
“However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”
“Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.”
“Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out.”
“Cinema is truth, 23.976 times per second.”
“The dominant, all-powerful factor of the film image is rhythm — expressing the course of time within the frame.”
“I am kino-eye. I am a mechanical eye. I, a machine, show you the world as only I can see it.”
“A cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist — painting pictures in the dark.”
“In being able to command the light God has given, we too become creators.”
“There is colour, there is the framing, there is the filmed object — but above all there is time upon them.”

A practice in light, motion
and the time between frames.
Vlad Prok is a Director of Photography based in Oporto, working internationally since 2018. The practice is in translating brands, artists and moments into images that outlive a campaign — a picture that holds.
Eight years of cinematography across cinema, commercials, music videos and brand films, built between Oporto, Lisbon, London, New York, Dubai, Miami, Doha, Riyadh, Roma, Milano, Kiev, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
The work is done with a keen eye for a perfectly composed shot, deliberate light, elegant music and patient editing. Equipped for any scale — from intimate documentary to full commercial production — with cinema-grade camera, lighting and audio, supported by a trusted crew when the picture demands it. Whatever the rig, the camera is there to dissolve into the moment.
